** Forum: The Point Foundation

Date: Sunday, February 21, 2010
Time: 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM
Location: Centenary Room

On February 21st the committee invites everyone to come to a Sunday morning FORUM where we will welcome John Wolfarth and introduce you to POINT FOUNDATION, an organization that the O&AR Committee directed funds to this past year.

Point Foundation provides scholarships, mentorship, leadership training and hope for students of merit who have been marginalized due to sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. Additionally, Point Foundation provides programs that affect social change by challenging attitudes that contribute to social stigma and its resulting prejudice, which is often experienced by those in the LGBT community.

Applicants to Point Foundation and subsequent scholars, turn to Point Foundation because their families are either unable or unwilling to support them and their goals for higher education. Each student has a compelling and inspiring story of overcoming incredible obstacles and hardships. Many have been cruelly rejected by their families, forced to leave home, and cut off from all financial support. Yet Point Scholars are excelling at our nation's most prestigious and demanding universities and colleges, while also leading in a variety of extracurricular and community service activities.

Every year, Point Scholars are matched with leaders across the professions who are committed to the welfare of The Point Foundation and the greater LGBT community. This mentoring arm of Point Foundation is intended to cultivate strong professional relationships between Scholars and professionals located within the Scholar’s academic fields of interest.

The Open & Affirming, Reconciling Committee believes the mission and ideals that are set forth by Point Foundation are in step with organizations that UPA Outreach supports for the greater good. We look forward to the opportunity of introducing Point Foundation to the congregation. Please join us or the FORUM on February 21st.
